If
you have an electric water heater, do the following:
- Wrap
it with a water heater jacket or insulating blanket. (These
should not be used on gas water heaters for safety reasons.)
- If
the water heater sits on a concrete slab, you can place
an insulation board (foam sheathing) under it to prevent
heat loss to the floor.
- A
temperature setting of 120° F is recommended (unless
your dishwasher requires it to be set at 140°).

If
you are purchasing a new water heater, a high efficiency electric
water heater is recommended. An electric water heater has several
advantages:
- There
is no pilot light.
- It
can be installed anywhere because it does not have a flame.
- It
doesn't need a flue.
- And
it doesn't involve a combustion process, so it can't cause a possible
carbon monoxide hazard.
